Abstract

Two stalwarts and major contributors to the advancement and understanding of chemical thermodynamics of solutions are Professor Rubin Battino and Professor Emmerich Wilhelm. In view of their decadal birthdays in 2021, Professor Battino’s 90th birthday and Professor Wilhelm’s 80th birthday, it was considered appropriate to honour their contributions in the field of chemical thermodynamics with a special Festschrift issue of the Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics. Their contributions have been both important and significant and include publications, lectures, demonstrations and not to be forgotten: discussions both formal and informal at conferences and during visiting professorships in different parts of the world. This introduction will include:
  • •Brief biographies
  • •Academic positions
  • •Publications and contributions
•Finally, concluding comments and my own personal homage
