Life-challenging conditions and helpers

Abstract

About fourteen years ago I read Siegel’s (1986) Love, Medicine, and Miracles. After reading the book, perhaps as a midlife crisis of conscience, I asked myself, “Rubin, you have all of these skills as a therapist, why aren’t you using them to help people with serious diseases?" This led me to track down the Charlie Brown Exceptional Patient Support Group in Dayton, Ohio. They follow Siegel’s precepts in their group and kindly allowed me to attend their semimonthly meetings. Eventually, I led my own support group for people with life-challenging diseases and their caregivers, and when that group folded I joined the Charlie Brown group as one of the facilitators.
