Abstract

The results of a study of the microstructures developed in a rapidly solidified Al-Gd alloy are presented. A metastable precipitate with potential as a high temperature dispersion strengthing phase was found after artificial aging. This precipitate is spherical, semi-coherent, 20–40 nm diameter, and apparently stable to an exposure at 450°C for one hour.
