Abstract

Despite substantial improvement in the oral health status of populations around the world, dental disease remains a significant social burden. An increasing amount of evidence is demonstrating how dental disease impairs overall health. 1 Dental disease in older adults is more prevalent than many other common chronic diseases, and it increases the onset and severity of complex conditions such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. 2
